Welcome to Biomimetica!

Biomimetic Technology Tree                              Biomimetic Papers

What is Biomimicry?

Biomimicry originated from the Greek word bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate. Biomimicry is a relatively new science that studies nature, its models, systems, processes and elements and then imitates or takes creative inspiration from them to solve human problems sustainably. Biomimetics is meant to indicate the process of understanding and applying biological principles, to human design, that underlie the function of biological entities at all levels of organization. This includes biomaterials, biomechanics, biological systems composed of individuals of one species (e.g. schools, herds and swarms), or multispecies ensembles.

Purpose

To maintain a database of relations between biology and engineering, by using biological length scales as a means of measurement, in order to simplify the navigation of biomimetic relationships and an easier generation of functional models for engineers.
